Not a day goes by without the word disaster being uttered. Like a mantra or a self-fulfilling prophecy, it restricts our imaginative capacity to construct possible futures. It forces us to remain within the narrow confines of our modernist time arrow (itself inspired by the religions of the Book), which would lead us straight to the Apocalypse. Now more than ever, artists and designers have a disruptive role to play in provoking numb imaginations.
The artists gathered here are attempting to make connections with phenomena that are rarely observed or observable: graphic scores of birdsong, the shadows cast by bramble branches, and the propagation of the mysterious mycelium deep underground. The notion of vanity is revisited here by a young generation of artists who show us that impermanence is at the heart of creation, at the heart of our lives as earthlings. – Beatrice Josse -
